How to use this resource: Resources are categorized and organized in alphabetical order. The name and description are listed with a link to the resource. Descriptions may include a brief verbiage from the educator who submitted the resource explaining how or why this resource was useful for them.

Overview: This curated list of resources was created by members of Mount Holyoke’s Teaching for Our Moment Educators. This program is funded as a part of a $249,900 FY2022 Congressionally Funded Community Projects grant made to Mount Holyoke that provides 100% of the funding to support the Teaching for Our Moment project to equip educators with the tools and support they need for their own social and emotional wellness and to promote the social, emotional, and academic wellness of their students.

Addressing Challenging Behaviors
From the IRIS Center, "Developed specifically with elementary school students in mind, this module—the first in a two-part series—discusses challenging behavior in terms of the phases of the acting-out cycle and offers strategies and tips for responding to students in each phase (est. completion time: 2.5 hours)."

Emotion Chains
After completing this activity Students will be able to better understand and track their emotions from day to day. Students will be able to identify and name the emotions they are feeling. Students will be able to create a visual showing their emotional progression over time. Students will be able to work towards increasing their emotional awareness.

Emotional Regulation Hierarchy
This helps view learning emotion regulation as a continuum where students are moving towards self regulation. Identifying where students are (and you are) on the continuum can help you identify next steps.

Emotions Wheel With Zones of Regulation
In a Special Education classroom, children can't always verbally communicate their emotions. I feel that having visual communication aids with colorful zones to show where their emotional state resides is a helpful tool.

Getting to Know Your Brain

"Give 'em Five" - responsibility centered discipline (RCD) in the classroom
Responsibility Centered Discipline (RCD) in the classroom. After attending a workshop delivered by Larry Thomas regarding "Give 'em Five" I knew this was a resource for me in the classroom. I teacher Visual Art in Alternative High Schools in Springfield. Being able to address students with issues, in the moment, directly, and with confidence and compassion has made my classroom productive and engaging.

Mental Health First Aid Kit
Similar to a traditional First Aid Kit, the Mental Health kit includes a variety of supplies that will help support a student who is becoming or showing signs of dysregulation. The supplies are orientated towards play to support a student's ability to relax, cope, and get grounded.

Morning Meeting Check-In
It is a way to smooth start your day and check in with students at the same time you know how are people feeling before start working, with the video you encourage people to believe in themselves and try harder.

Onward: Cultivating Emotional Resilience in Educators
Just like the website, the book details how to: cultivate resilience, uncover your true self, understand emotions, use your energy where it counts, adopt a mindful, story-telling approach to communication and community building, create an environment of collective celebration.

PBIS World
This resource provides tiered intervention ideas for various challenging student behaviors. It can be helpful to educators who are looking for possible solutions to obstacles they are facing when working with students.

RAIN Technique
The RAIN technique (#7 on the link) is a simple way for kids to notice and accept their feelings. The four steps offer a growth mindset approach to recognizing and processing failures. By taking a mindful approach, kids can learn to better accept and respond to failure, as well as their feelings associated with it.

Rainbow Breathing
This is a great video for taking a moment to set a reset. It takes less than 5 minutes and helps students refocus and get ready for whatever is next. The visualization in the video is great in particular for students who struggle with mindfulness.

Rest is Resistance
From the founder and creator of The Nap Ministry, Rest Is Resistance is a battle cry, a guidebook, a map for a movement, and a field guide for the weary and hopeful. This book is rooted in spiritual energy and centered in Black liberation, womanism, somatics, and Afrofuturism. With captivating storytelling and practical advice, all delivered in Hersey’s lyrical voice and informed by her deep experience in theology, activism, and performance art, Rest Is Resistance is a call to action and manifesto for those who are sleep deprived, searching for justice, and longing to be liberated from the oppressive grip of Grind Culture.

Restorative Justice in the Classroom Podcast/Transcript
This resource gives an overview of restorative justice, how it is used, and what uses it might have in the classroom. This is a really interesting idea especially with how it relates to the idea of SEL in classroom.

Sandtray Therapy
This is a resource that can be used one-on-one or in small groups as a way to build connections. This is a great tool for students to work through conflicts, designing stories, get creative, and build relationships with a teacher or peers.

The Stress Worksheet by Dr. Emily Nagoski
This resource is valuable because it walks a person through identifying their stressors and how to manage them.

Tara Brach website
Tara Brach is a clinical psychologist specializing in trauma-informed practices. Her website is centered on meditation, emotional healing and spiritual awakening.

Teaching Competencies in the Context of Disciplines
This paper details the findings of 2.5 years of research that I led with over 100 educators across 8 disciplines. It details how to teach educators to infuse SEL competencies into academic content lessons.

The Thinking Trap from Classroom Mental Health
This is an activity/lesson for students about thinking traps. It lists the common ones has a worksheet to untwist them!

Zones of Regulation Check-In
I use this in my classroom as an interactive Zones of Regulation activity. It is presented with a pocket on the bottom to hold popsicle sticks. Students and staff can ID where they are when they enter the room by placing their popsicle stick in the corresponding Zone. I can check in on kids who may be feeling heightened.

Sometimes everyone needs a few minutes to recharge. Any type of 1 or 5 minute meditations can be so helpful to students - children and adults alike - to reset and clear their minds.

Across Generations: Michelle Obama and Her Mentees
Michelle Obama's podcasts was one part of my racial healing arsenal. It discusses the challenges unique to black women processing racial injustice.

Daily First 5 Emails
The First 5 is an easy tool used to develop community within your school and classroom. During the first 5 minutes of your class, choose the optimal portion of the email to implement and watch as your students naturally open up, connect with each other and build deeper connections and learning in your classroom.

FUN Getting to Know You Activities
This website provides a variety of different get to know you activities. These activities can really be used at any time to help break up the monotony of a routine. Building good and nurturing good relationships is always a must.

Ice Breaker: 2 Truths & a Lie
As a get to know you activity, each participant tells truths and a lie about themselves. Others guess which one is the lie. Encourage participants to vary the order when presenting to fellow participants (you don't want everyone's lie to be the last one).

Kindness Activity
This is a great community activity for acknowledging each other's strengths. Here is an overview of one way to do this, but I most recently did it for Valentine's with construction paper hearts. It was a great way to get all students involved in the exchange; even if they didn't bring in Valentines!

Abolitionist Teaching and the Future of Our Schools
When we consider wholeness and wellness, it is important to consider how we create racially healthy spaces for our students. Bettina Love, Gholdy Muhammad, and Dena Simmons do a masterful job of explaining what that looks like. Dena Simmons is a particularly important scholar when it comes to equitable SEL practices.

Abolitionist Teaching Network's Guide for Racial Justice and Abolitionist Social and Emotional Learning
There are SEL practices that are rooted in Eurocentric norms that can do harm to BIPOC students, and we need to be aware of those implications in our SEL work. The Abolitionist Teaching Network provides a resource rich guide here that will support equitable SEL practices.

Racial microaggressions are brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward people of color. Perpetrators of microaggressions are often unaware that they engage in such communications when they interact with racial/ethnic minorities.

Larry Ferlazzo brought many different perspectives on the power of SEL in classroom/educational spaces that perpetuate systems of oppression.

This resource provided a grade level outcomes and scenarios when addressing anti-bias in the classroom. It outlines the outcomes from K-12.

Teaching for Black Lives
Teaching for Black Lives grows directly out of the movement for Black lives. We recognize that anti-Black racism constructs Black people, and Blackness generally, as not counting as human life. Throughout this book, we provide resources and demonstrate how teachers connect curriculum to young people's lives and root their concerns and daily experiences in what is taught and how classrooms are set up. We also highlight the hope and beauty of student activism and collective action.

The Light in Their Eyes : Creating Multicultural Learning Communities
In this 10th Anniversary Edition of her popular text, Sonia Nieto reviews where we have been and where we should be going in our pursuit of creating multicultural learning communities in our schools. With a new Introductory Chapter and a new Epilogue, Nieto addresses some of the changes we have experienced during the past decade that help explain the current sociopolitical environment―our increasing diversity, the altering conditions in schools and in society, the influence of poverty on learning, and the impact of NCLB on classrooms and schools.

When SEL is Used as Another Form of Policing
We need to ensure that SEL practices are not used as another way to focus on compliance and student/family/community blaming, instead of focusing on the school/district policies, practices, and procedures that may contribute to a lack of student wellness.

White Supremacy Culture
Many of the traits listed by Tema Okun in "White Supremacy Culture" (this website and earlier print versions) are the very traits that hinder teachers from being playful, flexible, and responsive with my students. These descriptions help us to remember that our practices and assumptions are culture-bound, not universal, and that such values as a sense of urgency (for example, as applied to raising test scores in a "failing" school), worship of the written word, fear of conflict, and the belief in our own right to stay comfortable are not only not universal, but have been used to suck all play and joy out of our schools.

This is a collection of spotlights and quick links connected to positive psychology.

The Science of Well-Being for Teens
This fee course was developed to address rising rates of anxiety, depression and suicide rates for kids between ninth and 12th grade.

SEL SWOT Graphic Organizer

Brain Breaks with Go Noodle
Most educators are likely familiar with GoNoodle. Super great for a quick brain break that also releases the wiggles.

Brain Gym
It teaches teachers and students how to use specific movements to help with energy, focus, and spatial and motor skills required for literacy. Also it gives teachers and students a movement break that can be fun and relaxing.

Brain Gym Ideas
Brain Gym has a variety of activities to activate and ready the brain for learning. Different activities are meant to energize, calm, etc. There are also many YouTube videos of the examples.

Can You Follow Directions?
See how well participants can READ and FOLLOW directions. This can be used at any time, but assists in driving home the idea of following directions in order to avoid unnecessary steps.

Creativity with Squiggles
Put squiggles on to sticky notes - one per person/student. Have the students create a picture or object from the "squiggle." This is a great way to foster creativity. The link gives directions on how best to explore the squiggle drawings with the class.

Daily Reflection
Have your students complete this daily to track their confidence and competency with the skills and study habits they are working on.

Embedding Competencies Within Disciplines

Here Comes Science by They Might Be Giants
This is a collection of songs for children all about various STEM topics. The songs can also be found in a video format so children can visually see and hear while learning all about science at any age or ability.

The Marshmallow Challenge
This is a great resource because it combines STEM, team building, communication and socialization. The group cannot complete the task without utilizing these skills and are competing against other groups within the classroom. Instructions.

Mid-class stretching
Incorporating a short stretching session in the middle of the class period provides a mental break and a space to reset. This can be part of the class routine, and it can be a good transition moment especially if the class activities require long periods of sitting down. And, stretching is good for teachers too!

Mindfulness and music
Incorporating music during mindfulness activities deactivates the brain from thinking, and it helps us relax and be "in the moment." Play music when students are cutting, drawing, coloring, and doing creative writing.

This is a great and FUN way for students to experience things outside of the school walls.

Peanut Butter & Jelly Follow Directions Activity
This is a FUN activity that teaches participants (of ALL ages) the importance of communicating clearly, which of course allows people to follow directions specifically as give. I have done this activity with children AND adults.

Principles of Instructions: Research-Based Strategies That All Teachers Should Know

Spot the Difference
Students call out directions as you move the cursor on the projection screen. They have fun learning to verbalize descriptions of colors, objects, directions, places, etc.

Stories with Holes
Stories with Holes by Nathan Levy can be an opener for many classes for children and adults. They are basically riddles and participants ask yes/no questions to "fill in the holes." These Google Presentations are recreated from the actual books.

Story War - by Cantrip Games
It's a game that also utilizes debate skills and citing evidence to build arguments.

Teachers Pay Teachers/Art Bellwork worksheets
Through brief writing, within the first five min of class, it encourages students to document their goal setting, work habits, personal reflections, reflection on the art and of their lives. It also opens up a dialog to have with another student or as a whole class (particularly the section called, "Mindful Monday").

From the author: My role has changed from Keeper Of The Gradebook to intellectual advisor. Instead of rating student work, I tell them what they did well and what they can look to improve next time. I coach them with guiding questions to set their own learning goals and evaluate their own work. Since I've stopped grading students, the conversations in the classroom have shifted. Instead of "Miss, what assignments do I need to turn in to improve my grade?" students ask, "Miss, how do I unpack this question?" "Miss, can you read this and give me feedback?" "Miss, how do I explain this?" "Miss, I need to write a few more sentences but I'm stuck. Where do I go from here?"

"Mom Genes" by Abigail Tucker (book)
A fascinating book about the science behind motherhood and infant development. Covers biochemistry, neuroscience, sociology, history, animal behavior, etc. Helpful as an educator so we can understand how our students entered the world and how that impacts their education today.

10 Ways to Manage Stress in the Workplace
Workplace stress has a big impact on teachers. It can lead to less productivity, unhappiness on the job, an increase in sick days taken and physical ailments; ultimately, it can lead to a form of depression called burnout. Workplace stress can also spill over into our lives, leading to worsening personal relationships.

Amplifier Wellness Kit for Teachers
This is a set of resources (lots of visual/artistic resources) to support teachers with their own mental health as well as with their work supporting students. There is information, there are prompts, there are challenges, etc. that address lots of different stressors people experience.

Anne Helen Petersen resources
Anne Helen Petersen writes so many pieces that resonate with me, but she's done a few that I want to recommend in particular - one on teachers but also one on self-care. On self care she highlights the work of Dr. Pooja Lakshmin who notes, "Real self-care is not a thing to do, or to buy. It’s a way to be. It’s in your choices and the way you make them. Real self-care is not a noun, it’s a verb."

Can Chiropractic Care Help With Stress?
Reduce and manage stress's manifestations (teeth grinding, tension headaches, tight muscles, etc.). This is a blog that shows chiropractic care helps reduce physical stress.

"Common Time" snack time
Host weekly "snack time" during a period of time that many have as prep time. Even if it lasts 10 or 15 minutes, it was nice to stop by the classroom, have a snack, and have a conversation about anything (not necessarily school related).

Escape from Reality
Need a mental break, but cannot get away? Have a picture of a calming environment that you can focus on for a quick escape.

Identifying Gaslighting in the Workplace
It is helpful to revisit the ways in which gaslighting impacts us in the workplace so we can more readily note the patterns, protect our confidence, sense of self worth as well as seek emotional and psychological repair. Such as focusing on self care and maintaining perspective that gaslighting is the problem not your competence and or self worth.

This program is funded as a part of a $249,900 FY2022 Congressionally Funded Community Projects grant made to Mount Holyoke that provides 100% of the funding to support the Teaching for Our Moment project to equip educators with the tools and support they need for their own social and emotional wellness and to promote the social, emotional, and academic wellness of their students. The project includes both a one-day teacher conference and a six-month-long professional learning circle with mentorship for K-12 educators.
