Ensuring Success by Enhancing the Learning of Our Youngest Mathers This session will support leaders and teachers to understand critical early numeracy content progressions by viewing videos of students in the domain of early arithmetical learning as researched by Dr. Leslie Steffe. We will also consider early structuring and its foundational impact on the way students make sense of counting and addition strategies. Promoting an asset based approach, the session will show interview assessment strategies to ensure that teachers are uncovering, acknowledging and building on the unique knowledge each mather possesses. A key instructional technique, distancing the setting, will be examined to ensure students are moving forward in their understanding in a robust manner. This session will support you to bring to light the brilliance of our youngest mathers and support them to build on that brilliance.'

Early Numeracy is Critical! Make an Impact! (K-2 Focus) Did you become a K- 6 leader without K-2 teaching experience like I did? Are your K-2 teachers supported in literacy but not math because they are not “testing grades”? Are you a K-2 teacher who wants to be as effective as possible teaching math? Then this session is for you. K-2 is a critical time for math learners. The session will examine key numeracy content and strategies to support teachers to effectively teach students in these grade levels.

Early Numeracy is Critical! Make an Impact! This session will support participants with critical early numeracy content progressions by viewing videos of student thinking in the domain of addition and subtraction and number words and numerals. Based on the research of Dr. Leslie Steffe and Dr. Robert Wright we will learn about key cognitive shifts students make as they put together early numeracy concepts. Interview assessment strategies will be examined to ensure that teachers are identifying the knowledge each student has and then building on it. The shift to truly knowing what each student understands is critical to ensure that we are providing equitable instruction that moves each child forward. Too often paper and pencil assessments are used and these do not provide all of the information needed to instruct effectively. We must build on students' strengths as we move them forward. Key instructional techniques such as pedagogical engineering and distancing the setting will be examined to ensure students are moving forward in their understanding in a robust manner. Lastly, we will unpack entry points to support teachers to examine their practice and leaders will leave with a plan of action to engage teachers in a way that will ignite their passion for teaching mathematics.
Deepen your mathematical content and pedagogical knowledge, build leadership skills, and ensure equitable outcomes for your students through this coed, online program, designed for K-8 educators. Assignments have immediate application in school settings and support the work of teachers, coaches, and instructional specialists.
